By J. W. Kennedy
"Your house is sitting on the stream we drank from, the bushes we ate from, the tree's that we lived in...you think you could help us out by keeping your bird feeder filled? We can't have babies if we don't live through the winter. If you help us out, we will sing you songs all year long!"
A bird feeder is an act of kindness from one species to another. For all the birds do for us, and for all that we have done to them, the least we can do for our feathered friends in our own yards is to buy them some food in the worst of seasons and difficulties. Our homes are often sitting on the very land where trees, bushes, maybe a stream and more once provided for these birds. So give back some of what has been taken by purchasing and maintaining a birdfeeder or 2 or 3.
I put the Brome Peanut up 3 days ago and filled it with raw shelled peanuts. The woodpeckers took to it immediately, Cardinals too. I have always had woodpeckers around but never in the numbers I have seen the last few days. This is a far better and cheaper option to suet cakes.
This is my 3rd and latest Brome feeder. 2 months ago I bought the Brome Finch Feeder 1016, and I've had the Brome 1024 for 6 years. These feeders are the best on the market, are very well made and engineered, squirrel proof and worth the money.
You could buy a cheaper birdfeeder, a mistake I have made several times over the years. Learn from the mistakes of others. Cheap feeders are not squirrel proof or resistant and won't last.
Squirrels cause 2 problems with feeders. The first you might have guessed; squirrels can eat so much seed as to double, triple, quadruple the cost of birdseed. Even a feeder for free, using so much seed wouldn't be a bargain! But the 2nd issue which surprised me at the time, the squirrels will chew to pieces cheap feeders. Cheap feeders can look fantastic but the soft plastic parts such as the food reservoir made of flexible plastic can be hacked to pieces in minutes. So intent are squirrels that even my brome with a steel cap has intense chews marks on the edges, as the squirrels tried to chew their way to the food.
A good bird feeder is an investment. It costs more but lasts a very long time and guaranteed, it saves money on seed, it keeps squirrels from becoming dependent on the feeder and their weight under control (LOL) and is by far the better value by a very wide margin.
Happily I can say Brome customer service is excellent. About a year ago the green perch ring on my Brome 1024 broke as weathering caused this plastic part to brittle and snap. I sent an e-mail to Brome and they replied in a day, sending me a new ring free of charge by mail. On another occasion about 6 months ago, I took my 1024 apart for cleaning and put it back together wrong. I called for service and they explained what I did wrong, a mistake probably nobody else would ever make -but as the Brome person explained the mistake, she mentioned I might have damaged the unit but not to worry, that they would replace the broken parts for free. As it turned out that wasn't necessary.
In a small but most important way, you can pay back some of the damage that has been done to our feathered friends saving many of their lives, and you can do this easily from your own back yard with just a bird feeder or two, or three. Keep your feeder(s) filled and clean as your birds will really depend on them, and when the weather warms add a Hummingbird feeder or two. In the Spring your wintering birds will raise the next generation, all the while returning your kindness as they fill the sky with flight, your trees with song, while being with you and your family all the days of your life. Don't believe me? Just open your door and take a look and listen right now. :-)
If you have kids consider making this their responsibility, a simple weekly chore and small life lesson on responsibility. I kind of think of it as one generation helping another, one species to another.
"Opie had been caring for wild baby birds that lost their mother, and remarked on setting them free that sadly the cage was empty. His father Andy quickly replied, "Yes, son, it sure does. But don't the trees seem nice and full."

By t_darc
To start, I typically love Brome feeders. They are well made and serve a purpose by keeping squirrels off and also hold up nicely in the weather. However, this feeder is billed to be more than a squirrel proof feeder. With its adjustable weight shroud, this type of feeder is supposed to be adjustable to keep off larger nuisance birds. This is my third Brome feeder. I have the Mini 1055 (which isn't weight adjustable but keeps off the squirrels but does little to deter larger birds as they just cling to the wire mesh), the Peanut Plus, and the original 1024 Plus. The 1024 is also a weight adjustable feeder, and it does a great job of adjusting to selectively keep the larger birds off of it. The problem I find with the Peanut Plus is that it does not adjust enough to keep the larger birds off. For example, the Blue Jay... I have nothing against the Jay, but I don't want them all over the feeders. If they want to eat, I'd like for them to eat from the ground since they're bullies. This feeder would be perfect if it adjusted to the sensitivity of the 1024 Plus. However, for some reason the people at Brome decided to calibrate this one differently and I'm not totally sure why. It can not be adjusted enough to selectively prevent larger birds such as Jays and Grackles from feeding from it. A little disappointed at this one...
*Update*
Several months ago, while trying to devise a solution for my Jay problem, I thought of using wheel weights to weigh down the shroud and make the feeder more weight sensitive. Wheel weights are small square weights that have a tape adhesive on one side and usually come in strips of several 1/4 or 1/2 ounce pieces. They are traditionally used to balance vehicle tires. However, I thought they might help to effectively increase the sensitivity of the shroud since the spring certainly doesn't provide the level of sensitivity needed to keep large birds such as Jays and Grackles off the feeder. So I went on eBay and purchased 1/4 ounce wheel weights and placed 6 of them on the inside of the lower part of the shroud. With the feeder set to the most sensitive setting, this extra weighting has helped prevent the larger birds from raiding the feeder while still allowing the smaller birds (chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, downy woodpeckers, etc.) to feed from it. The smart Jays have figured out how to squeeze their beaks between the shroud and the seed canister to barely pick at some loose peanuts, even when the feeder appears to be in the fully closed position. The addition of the wheel weights, though mostly effective, does cause the feeder to be in a partially closed position at all times. The feeder remains partially open when smaller birds are on the feeder, and fully closes when larger varieties attempt to feed. Though this is not ideal and should be something Brome addressed in the original design of the feeder, it seems to be the best solution to modify its incomplete design. Perhaps someday a company will make a peanut feeder that addresses this issue. Until then, this still appears to be the best peanut feeder out there.

By M. Redhead
This has been up for over two weeks and the woodpeckers have not discovered it as yet. However, the squirrels have been all over it and are unable to get any peanuts.
I love Brome feeders. This is my fifth Brome squirrel proof product. It's great to be able to keep squirrels out; eventually the woodpeckers will find the feeder with peanuts.
Great product.
Update on 2/16/12
Yesterday, I saw a woodpecker enjoying some peanuts. He/she was there for a long time. Also, the finches seems to love this.
I agree with the other reviewer, J. W. Kennedy that we should give back to our feather friends. Very well written Mr. Kennedy. I too love Brome products; they are superior!
