With cheerful songs and graceful flight, birds enrich the environment of every yard. While plants, flowers, and regular bird feeder provide food for our feathered friends, the small birds often must compete with larger, aggressive birds and critters such as squirrels to find adequate nourishment. Duncraft caters to these petite birds with this squirrel-proof selective bird feeder. With its protective design, the hanging feeder allows small birds to dine unfettered throughout the year.
The selective feeder contains seed in a 15-1/2-inch recycled polycarbonate tube. Birds perch before six metal seed ports to eat. A metal cage-style casing surrounds the tube, keeping pests away by allowing only small birds to pass through the gaps in the casing to dine. A metal cap tops the feeder to thwart damage from eager claws and teeth and Duncraft's squirrel-lock secures the tube inside. To satiate squirrels and large birds without disrupting the smaller birds' meal, discarded seed falls through the feeder's wire base to the ground. The feeder offers a loop for installing the feeder from tree branches or from an overhang. Users should regularly clean the feeder with equal parts water and white vinegar to protect the birds from bacteria and disease and restock with fresh seed. The feeder holds approximately 1-1/2 pounds of seed. Birdseed is not included. The full feeder spans 17-1/2 inches in length with a 10-inch diameter. This item weighs 5-1/2 pounds upon shipping. --Jessica Reuling

By Rob Jacques
Well, I bought two of these contraptions last summer and they keep the large gray squirrels out of the birdseed, but NOT the slimmer, smaller red and Douglas' squirrels. These squirrels have NO problem climbing through the wire mesh and resting comfortably on the feeder's bottom while they eat their fill. Also, Norway rats (the bane of birders throughout the U.S.) easily get through the mesh. My solution was to buy metal torpedo squirrel baffles for the poles. It was an expensive solution, but it has been 100 percent effective. Also, don't buy the bird feeder cleaning brush advertised by Duncraft. It doesn't fit this feeder because it can't get by the metal tubes supporting the openings. And invest in a pair of pliers to help you wrench open the plastic bottom seal on the feeder. All in all, the feeder is effective in keeping out large gray squirrels, jays, crows, pigeons, and such birds, and it keeps the seed dry in the rain. Chickadees, nuthatches, warblers, titmice, and finches love it!

By Ambergris
I have owned several brands of this kind of feeder for years now. There is no doubt in my mind that with the possible exception of the squirrel buster series, this is the best design around for totally deterring pesky squirrels. (Forget the ones that have a cage closely surrounding a tube feeder. All that does is provide a comfortable place all over for squirrels to cling too and clean you out). Although I have noticed that fewer birds choose to enter the cage versus what I witness with an exposed tube feeder, many eventually get used to it, and you lose nothing to squirrels, which is what its really all about. My only objection this model is its price. Its really nothing but a rather cheap style feeder inside a cage that carries an outrageous price tag. Your local Tractor Supply Company (TSC) carries a similar model for only $20 at the time of this writing. Its not exactly the same, but far cheaper, and even a more attractive feeder than this one in my opinion. If you're in the market for one of these effective models, I suggest you check out the one at the TLC website. (I have enclosed a link the the feeder in the comments section of this review. Amazon tends to delete links outside its store when enclosed in actual reviews). Do yourself and your wallet a good service and check out the TLC model, and then decide for yourself. And Bon Apitit!!....

By Syl Helminiak
A bit pricey but worth the money. A truly squirrle proof feeder that will last longer than ten of your usual home center feeders. I have two other Duncraft feeders which I purchased 15 years ago which are still in daily use.
